Recently after the Michigan, Michigan State football game, a scandal surfaced. The assistant coach for Michigan Connor Sailors is taking the majority of the blame for the whole scandal. The head coach for Michigan Jim Harbaugh has declined knowing anything about any Sailor’s operation.
The scandal involved Michigan stealing Michigan State’s signs of their plays. Many think that stealing signs is a strategic move and most colleges do it. “Every college does it every year,” said Senior Mahn Nguyen.
There’s also the question of if the accusations are true, and what the consequences should be for their actions. Both Michigan and Michigan State fans have their own takes on these events.
Senior Bennett Macomber, a Michigan fan said, “I do think it happened and I think there should be some sort of punishment like fines and suspension, but I also believe it is being blown out of proportion.”
Many think that this is a regular occurrence in college sports, but Sailor was buying and paying people to go to games to steal other people’s signs. He bought over thirty tickets for thirty different games that scouts went to, to steal signs. Higher-ups were able to find out about these purchases due to the fact that Sailor had his Venmo viewable to the public.
When Sailor would transfer the money to the scouts he would leave a description. It is not confirmed but it is thought that one title ‘GA’ was to steal signs at the Georgia, Ohio State game of last year. Raising suspicions even more, the money was transferred on the exact day of the game.
The BigTen coaches had a meeting to see if there would be repercussions against Michigan and stealing signs. Nothing has been released to the public yet about this matter. There was also a meeting with the Athletic Directors of the BigTen and Michigan State’s Athletic Director, who pushed for Michigan to be punished due to the cheating scandals.
