On October 18th, 2023, the Grand Ledge High School hosted a choir concert, and it was full of different genres of music. The concert had the choirs of Bel Canto, Vocal Ensemble, Concert Choir, Orion’s Belt, and the Madrigals. The choir concert also had a special guest Jacob Beckon, a Central Michigan University student who was shadowing one of the current choir directors, Daniel Dade.
“I’m just really appreciative to work with one of the best choirs in the state, also the teachers were very helpful and gave me an unforgettable experience,” Jacob Beckon said.
This year’s song list was a favorite for many of the students, especially the ones in Madrigals, evoking lots of emotion and distinct tones.
“My favorite song that we did was There Will Come Soft Rains. The story that it tells is beautiful and so are the different harmonies. It’s about how time will keep on moving when mankind is gone and without man there would only be nature,” Junior Lilly Pettit said.
The madrigals had a theme to the songs they performed that evening, centered around the passing of time.
“The choice of songs for Madrigals was very intentional, all of the songs are about how time slowly slips away and how things change over your life span,” Tori Berk said, a Senior in Madrigals and Orion’s Belt
Something new in recent years to the school’s choir system is a new extracurricular called Orion’s BBelt. It’s an acapella group of Grand Ledge students who audition and our selected by Mr. Dade. “It was nice to incorporate different music into the choir concert, and give them a different perspective on music than the other sounds they are used to,” Berk said.
