On Thursday November 9th, 2023, the Grand Ledge Musical program had their opening night of The Little Mermaid. There were two separate casts that got to perform, the Blue Cast and the Gold Cast.
The Blue Cast started the weekend of shows, with Mia Sanchez who played Ariel and Luke Nunez who played Prince Eric. Many people came out to see the production over the weekend that they were performing.
“It started as a mess” Samuel Schafer, who played Sebastian, said “and ended as a Broadway show.”
The cast and stage crew put a lot of time and effort into the show. They had several rehearsals such as putting on a performance for the kindergarteners of Grand Ledge schools. The kids later drew drawings for the cast as a way to thank them for their performance, which now hangs outside the dressing room in the high school’s basement.
The show had several different effects to simulate being under water. In several scenes, Ariel was being suspended from the ceiling as a way to make it seem like she was swimming. The stage crew also used blue lights and filters to make the lights look like water and waves.
“I loved the water effects,” Senior, Rylee Hanna said, “and how they used different princesses with Eric.”
The show included several things to keep the crowd entertained such as adding the other princesses to the show when Prince Eric is having the singing competition. The play was another big hit for the Grand Ledge Musicals program. The cast and stage crew worked long hours to pull off this musical.
