This year at Grand Ledge High School, a new club has opened up: Crochet Club!
For those who don’t know, crochet is a craft that’s similar to knitting, the biggest difference is that you use one hook instead of two needles.
The student leaders of the Crochet Club are Sophomore, Fern Sigurani, and Senior, Hannah Struthers, and the advisor is Mrs. Read.
“I feel like it’s a good skill to learn and a lot of students this year in particular I’ve discovered love it and have always wanted to learn or already knew and just needed a place to do it,” Read Said.
The club meets about every week on Thursday after school in room 104, but students are also welcome to crochet in Mrs. Read’s room during C3, if it is not a freeze day.
Crochet club is open to all levels of crocheters, “In this club, we teach people how to crochet, even if they have no experience,” Sigurani said.
The club has big plans to make a difference in the community, “right now, we are working on blankets to donate for homeless shelters for the winter” Sigurani said.. “The second project will be some hats for a women’s shelter and winter gear for different women’s shelters in the area,” Read said.
Dues for students interested in joining are $4 per member, “the dues go towards paying for hooks and new yarn as well as fundraisers in the future,” Sigurani said.
Crochet club provides members with yarn and hooks at the meetings, and they are also accepting donations.
“I feel that crocheting is a very underrated hobby and I feel relaxed when I do it so I would love to teach others this fun hobby,” Sigurani said,“you can create many cute things for yourself and others.”
“It’s relaxing like it’s the whole combination of you’re technically resting but you’re also making something and so it feels like you’re doing something but in reality you’re just taking a break so it’s very relaxing,” Read said.
