On January 8, 2024, the national college football championship took place. The game had the No.1 Michigan Wolverines playing the No.2 Washington Huskies in Houston, Texas at the NRG Stadium. Both teams who played were undefeated and were looking to stay undefeated.
Many Michigan fans going into the game were very hopeful for Michigan to come out with the win.
“I thought it was going to be an easy win for Michigan. I was super excited and confident in Michigan’s abilities,” said sophomore Abbey Fiero.
As soon as the game started Michigan saw their opportunity and they took it. In the first quarter, Michigan scored on their first drive. Washington on their first drive ended up with them kicking a field goal, but right before the quarter was over, the Wolverines scored another touchdown. This led to the score after the first quarter being 14-3.
The second quarter started and both teams started slow but eventually, Washington scored a touchdown and Michigan kicked a field goal. Going into halftime the score was 17-10, Michigan up by 7.
Coming out of the half the Huskies had the ball. It was a back and fourth quarter for both teams the whole time, but each team did manage to escape with a field goal. The fourth quarter was the Huskies’ last chance to win the National Championship. Michigan scored a touchdown which led to Washington having the ball. On this play, Michigan then caught an interception and they scored making the score 34-13.
Michigan is the 2023 National College Football Champions. Many people thought they didn’t deserve it due to the cheating scandal late last year but Michigan fans say otherwise.
“They deserved it, they scored a lot of points throughout the season and they showed they deserve the national championship title,” said Fiero.
This win is Michigan’s 12th National Championship win since 1997 and coach Jim Harbaugh’s first title in his 39 seasons.
