Grand Ledge High School’s varsity gymnastics team has always been known for their incredible talent and dedication. Winning 6 state championships and coming off a remarkable season last year with two individual state champions. This year’s team is facing new challenges with the loss of several athletes. Also With Duane Haring stepping down from the head coaching position, new head coach Hailey Grant will have a rebuilding season.
It is a rough start to the new season with multiple athletes injured and unable to compete to their best ability. With their first meet of the season, the team took their first conference loss after going undefeated for the past two years. They competed against Fowlerville which is a conference rival.
“Our first meet went okay, we have a small team this year with a few injuries but it will get better as the season goes on,” head coach Haley Grant said.
With the new construction at the high school, came a new weight room. What was the old weight will now go to the gymnastics team. For multiple years they have had a gym that did not have the equipment they needed to gain more skills and get stronger. The athletes have had to drive to a gym in Lansing three days a week to get the right equipment.
“It’s hard for our team to gain skills and become better with the lack of equipment we have,” Lydia Beaton said.
This season will be about healing old and new injuries. They are trying to take it easy and prepare for next season. They hope to upgrade their skills and end the season strong.
