Winter competitive cheer is back! After COVID-19, competitive cheer was gone but after bringing it back last year. It has been a successful past 2 seasons. Many new girls joined this season, they even had to add a JV team to compete with them.
The competitions consist of three rounds, the first round focuses on formation change and chants. The second round is centered on tumbling and jumps, then lastly the third round is all about stunting and a mix of tumbling and chants. They get scored on how well they execute these certain skills, which the GL girls have been receiving high scores all season!
“Since the start of the season we have been progressive getting better at every competition and getting more comfortable with learning and competing our rounds,” Varsity cheerleader Sam Postema says.
Some of their past competitions have been located at St. Johns, Mason, Fowlerville, Owasso and Grand Blanc. Each time they have gone out on the mat and always had the crowd entertained. In some competitions they might not win first but they are always up at the top of the rankings.
“I love the girls, we work so hard together and I can just tell how much work they put in,” Varsity cheerleader Savannah Grosshans says.
A big part of competitive cheer is the team and the bond between everyone and trust. When stunting it’s all about working together to complete the stunt and power through all the stunts. Stunt groups are formed of 4, sometimes 5 people all helping differently to put power in the stunt. There is a main base, side base, backspot, flier and sometimes a font spot for extras support.
“The girls this season have improved so much. They always try their best and even if something goes wrong they just learn from their mistakes and try again. I just know that next year they will be even more strong and bonded. I’m so happy to be coaching this amazing team” Coach Faith Kulang says.
As the season goes on, the team has a couple more chances to bring home more wins to represent the Comets.
