As the one year anniversary of the shooting at Michigan State University (MSU) approaches, the community still finds itself mourning those who passed during the shooting. On Feb. 13, 2023, the MSU campus was attacked by a gunman who opened fire on students, leaving a trail of shock, sorrow, and anger.
A day that begins as an ordinary morning of classes can quickly transform into chaos and fear. Alyssa Navin, a former Grand Ledge student who is now a sophomore at MSU, was on campus the day of the attack.
“On the day of the shooting, it was just a regular day. I went to Target with my roommates and got the text that we were going into lock down just 3 minutes after I got back to my dorm… I remember crying with my roommates listening to the scanner and hearing that there could be a bomb in our basement,” Navin said.
After the tragic event, MSU tried to support its students and staff during the time of uncertainty. “I feel that my school was very supportive after the shooting. We got plenty of time off of class… The community was very supportive as well. They put a lot of signs out and sent us sweet messages,” Navin said.
The effects of a shooting goes far beyond just the immediate aftermath. School shootings fundamentally alter the lives of parents, students, and staff members. “Because of the shooting, I am more aware of my surroundings and I am aware that something could go wrong at any moment,” Navin said.
Although school shootings and gun violence can bring psychological trauma, Navin shares a positive outlook on the events. “One positive change I have from the experience is being more appreciative of the people around me.”
In the aftermath of a school shooting, wounds are deep and the effects can last a lifetime. However, there are still stories of strength and unity. Communities come together to support one another, and people find comfort within each other. There is hope for preventing such tragedies in the future. Together, we stand resilient and honor the memory of those we have lost and to create a safe world for everyone.
