With many Grand Ledge High School (GLHS) Seniors turning 18, or close to it, there comes the privilege to vote in the upcoming election. On Feb. 27, 2024, the Michigan presidential primaries take place. For many GLHS students this will be their first time voting. Registration can be intimidating at first, but being informed can make the process less stressful.
Although in-person voting for the presidential primary is Feb. 27, 2024, early voting already started on Feb. 17, 2024. Although the date to register online has already passed you can still register to vote in person. You do not only have to be 18 to register, you can be 17 and a half to register. For most Grand Ledge residents Delta Charter Township Clerk’s office is the closest place to register to vote.

When going to register in person you will need your ID or a proof of residence, a piece of mail can be used. Once registered you will receive a voter registration card to know where you go to cast your ballot.
Students at GLHS have taken an interest in helping other students vote. On Tuesday Feb. 13, 2024 the Grand Ledge Turning Point USA club hosted a voting drive outside of the cafeteria. Turning Point is a non-profit organization that advocates for conservative politics on school campuses. GLHS senior Brenton Bell is the president of the Turning Point chapter at the high school.
“I wanna get students interested in politics and the way that this country works and that no matter their opinion that they have the right to voice it,” Bell said.
When asked about the motive to have a voting drive, Bell said, “A large percentage of our population including young people do not vote. They have the opinion that their vote doesn’t count when it truly does.”
The voting drive included paper registration forms that students could fill out or they had a device set up where they could register online.
“I think that it is important that we all make a difference, so if I could just get a few people registered I feel I made a difference,” Bell said.
