Grand Ledge Softball finished their 2022-2023 season with a loss to Holt in districts. The Comets’ Varsity team only lost one senior last year and has only two seniors this year. The Softball team takes a yearly trip to Florida over spring break to prepare them for the season. The Florida trip is a second tryout that determines teams and helps build their bonds and on-the-field chemistry.
“I really just had to get in the mindset that I could do it because I [knew] that there is a
lot of upperclassmen,” freshman Hailey Pitsch said. Pitsch was one of the four freshmen out of the twenty players that went. “I worked a lot outside of practice to help gain confidence in myself,” Pitsch added.
Some other underclassmen moved up to Varsity this year. Sophomore Bella Perez, a former Junior Varsity player joined the Varsity squad this year. “I’m excited to improve my skills moving up to varsity… but it has mostly been fun even though I’m not with my band people [old teammates].” Creating a strong bond off the field increases team
chemistry throughout the game. Getting back from Florida the Comets’ Softball team has had more chances to bond. “I think we’re all closer this year,” junior Faith McCarthy said. “ We hang out before and after practice. Also, a lot of us carpool together.” Grand Ledge Softball started its season with a win against Mason on April 6, 2024. The team hit 9 home runs and scored 25-20 and 12-3 in their first doubleheader. The Comets’ are 6-0 as of April 17, 2024. They play Okemos on April 29, 2024 at Okemos.
