This year the Grand Ledge Girls’ Varsity Soccer team has been looking to have a winning season.
Last year they did lose some seniors but many on the team are hopeful that the loss of players will not affect them this year.
“Losing some of the seniors will affect how we play for sure. Especially because they were the foundation of our team but we have great leaders who are stepping into those roles,” junior Kate Oberdank said.
Starting the year off they are 3-0 which has allowed them to create a positive outlook on the season that is ahead of them.
“Defeating these teams has given our team confidence. The performance shown in these games shows that we are capable of winning a lot as two of the three games we won late in the second half, showing the determination and grit this team has,” Oberdank said.
The players range from all grades but they have been working together as a team and not letting the age difference serve as a distraction.
“We did lose a lot of seniors but we have some new players who are ready to play. We work with each other on and off the field to help us get better,” junior Ella Baird said.
The bond on the field shows that the team is united as one and all have been willing to come together and fight for the wins. They have been working together off the field making the bonds they have with each other even stronger. Even though the season is off to a good start the team has already started to have a few rough patches with players getting injured.
“There have been a few injuries. We lost a previous starting center back, an upcoming center back and a forward. All of these losses have impacted the team but also give us more perseverance and hunger to win. The loss of two defenders has given us a young back line but they are amazing and constantly showing how strong and tight they are. Overall the
team is capable of stepping up and filling in for those injuries,” Oberdank said.
With players getting injured the team is having to work around it and create outcomes they are looking for. This season is one where they have to create their own game.
“People have stepped up to fill the gaps this team is needing,” Baird said.
