With the school year coming to an end summer is rapidly approaching. The last day of school is June 14 and the last day for seniors was May 24. But due to the school year coming to a close many students are noticing something different about Grand Ledge High School (GLHS).
Many schools close to the district are getting out of school weeks before GLHS. Even the time that the seniors get out is much later than in other school districts.
With school getting out late it starts to affect the plans that students have made for over the summer. Students are very eager to get out of class and get their summer started.
“This summer I plan to hang out with my friends, tan by the pool and play softball with my travel team,” junior Gianna Naccarato said.
Plans this summer including other schools or travel sports are also being affected by the last day of school. For example, travel sports teams have dates of events made that should be catering to everyone but the late get-out day can begin to affect these events.
“Since the last day of school is so late I won’t be at school. I will have to miss the last day of school because I have a travel softball tournament in Ohio,” sophomore Abigail Fiero said.
It’s often that students this year are missing the last day of school due to commitments that don’t have to do with the school district.
Students at GLHS are also noticing the late date the school gets out for the summer compared to other schools.
“Everybody at other schools gets out a week or two before us and things get planned for days that we are still in school,” Naccarato said.
But with all the negatives there is a positive to getting out of school late; in the fall school starts later. For the 2024-2025 school year, the start date is Aug. 27, 2024. Also getting out late allows for the breaks that are during the school year have the potential to be longer than other schools.
“I’m so excited for next school year and how much earlier we get out compared to when we got out this year,” Fiero said.
