Grand Ledge’s High School musical for the 2024-25 school year is Mean Girls. Students Making a Change (SMAC), a club at GLHS, is promoting anti-bullying with activities students can partake in such as a spirit week leading up to the musical. The week of opening night SMAC held a spirit week in awareness of anti-bullying.
SMAC’s spirit week will include the following activities: compliment day, make a new friend day, check in on a friend, sticky notes of affirmation, and white out to represent one surrendering to kindness. On Thursday, during both lunches, a table was set up with sticky notes and pens to write and share your affirmations.
Inspiration behind this all started with Meaghan Martin who acted as Jo Mitchell in Mean Girls 2 aired in 2011. Martin held a STOMP Out Bullying campaign after the film was released.
One student who is in both SMAC and this year’s musical, Lacy Baker, a senior at Grand Ledge has shared a peek at SMAC’s plans and goals for their campaign.
“SMAC is all about making a change especially in our own school. SMAC is going to hand out kindness candy cane grams during the show along with other fun activities during next week.”
One of the activities students can participate in is a paper chain made with positive words. This chain will be hung in the auditorium as an opening decoration for the musical. Around the school posters will also be hung on different types of bullying and how to receive help if it is needed.
Baker highlights the intent of this campaign, “Bullying is a huge part in the mean girls musical and SMAC’s goal is to bring awareness about anti-bullying and kindness through it!”
