Tyler Okonma, more widely known as Tyler, The Creator, released his 8th album on Oct. 28, 2024. The album, titled “CHROMAKOPIA,” is an experimental jazz-hip-hop-R&B fusion that is rising in popularity among music lovers everywhere.
The album rollout caused a frenzy of high anticipation, specifically when Okonma posted a picture of the album cover with the caption, “CHROMAKOPIA: October 28th”. Many were confused, since most times artists release albums on Fridays, and Oct. 28, 2024 was a Monday. Because of this weekday release, students at Grand Ledge High School (GLHS) had some pretty bizarre experiences listening to the album.
“I was in the car with my mom, on my way to the grocery store when listening to the album,” senior Naia Washington said.
“I was on the bus on my way to school listening to CHROMAKOPIA,” sophomore Eva Whipple said.
Sophomore Amity Price’s experience was even more abnormal, “I was showering when it randomly came on,” she said.
Most fans were satisfied with how the album turned out.
“I listened to it and was pleasantly surprised. I really liked how well the songs flowed together, and he had some great people featured on the album,” Washington said. “I really like the stories he’s telling in his songs. I like how he can tell a story very clearly, but also can make the lyrics sound cohesive to make a beautiful song.”
Whether it was with his lyrics or his beats, students like Washington were very happy with how the album turned out, some were even surprised.
“[It was] Very shocking for Tyler. I feel like it wasn’t something he would normally sing, the beats weren’t his normal type of beat.” Whipple stated. Many students enjoyed this album for its different quirks and characteristics.
Another good trait about the album was its relatability. Songs like “Like Him,” “Hey Jane,” and “I Killed You,” resonate with Okonma’s fans who are in tough situations. Listeners may be glad to have music that they can relate to.
“I think I can definitely relate to his song ‘Like Him’,” Washington stated. “I’ve never seen my dad in person before, but I have been told I look like him, so I really relate to Tyler’s lyrics about wondering if he looks like his dad, and him wanting his dad to give him love and affection.”
