On Wednesday, Dec. 4, the CEO of the UnitedHealthcare group Brian Thompson, was murdered in the streets of Manhattan. The suspect who shot Thompson was Luigi Mangione.
Mangione was an Ivy League graduate and the valedictorian of his high school. Mangione comes from a wealthy family that is very relevant in the real estate industry and owns golf courses and country clubs.
The status of his family left many confused about why he went to such lengths and how he eventually went to murder. Even Mangione’s mother states that this was something that she could see him doing.
Mangione was found in Pennsylvania after running from the police. He was running for several days, leading to a manhunt for Mangione, and he was found at a McDonalds in Pennsylvania. He was then taken to New York to be held. He faces charges in Pennsylvania but none as severe as murder.
Along with murder, he is also being tried for counts of terrorism.
Recently Mangione is now being charged with murder by the Federal Government. This means that he is either guilty of murder or he is not guilty. This gets rid of all of the possible degrees of murder that Mangione could be charged with. This now also allows Mangione to be eligible for the death penalty if he is convicted.
It was confirmed that Mangione was never a customer at UnitedHealthcare. Still, he did have a debilitating back injury that required a visit to the emergency room and screws to be placed in his spine. The motive for murder is still unknown but there has been a notebook found with evidence from Mangione.
Many believe that his motive for murder was the injury, but that will remain unconfirmed until Manigone himself reveals his motive.
The trial is set to happen on Feb. 24, 2025, but until then not a lot more information will be released.
