A new competition was introduced to Grand Ledge High School put on by Orion’s Belt. A Talent Show was performed on March 15th. Orion’s Belt is a student-run acapella group, and this year they decided to host a Talent Show. Students interested had to audition back in February and the talents that made it passed auditions competed on the 15th in front of a judge panel. The judges were Mrs. Landis, Mrs. Coulon, and Mr. Heany. Some acts that premiered in the talent show were singing, dancing magic, and jokes.
Judah Deaton got first place with Card Magic, Rowan Therrian to second place with singing I Know by Fionna Apple, and Brynn Theide won third place with singing and playing piano She Used To Be Mine by Waitress. The top three won a prize basket containing gift cards, squish mellows, candy, and a trophy
Deaton has only been performing magic since this fall and was very excited about his win and preparation for it.
“It feels really good to win” and
“I didn’t practice much for the show itself but I’ve been gradually getting better at doing tricks since I learned them.”
Deaton has been practicing new tricks and talents,
“My favorite trick is the Color Changing card because it’s the longest one and it seems the most impossible.”
he was at first uninterested in joining the talent show,
“I originally didn’t want to perform in the talent show but Lilly Pettit voluntold me to do it.”
Lily Pettit, a member of Orion’s belt who helped start and put on the talent show, shares the why behind it.
“We decided to do a talent show because there is so much talent in this school that isn’t necessarily seen. I thought it would be really cool to give everyone in the school a chance to be on stage instead of just choir or band kids.“
Petit also discusses the different types of acts performed
“I was mainly expecting to see singing since that is more common than things compared to magic or juggling. Most of our acts were singing, but we also had someone do magic who ended up winning first place. The acts that are different and stand out are really the things we look for in this type of show, but all talents are showcased.”
The Orion’s Belt met were very satisfied when it came to the performance of the talent show.
“I would say that the show met my expectations because at first I was very worried that we weren’t going to get any participation, but eventually people started emailing and wanting to participate,” Pettit explains.
