The Grand Ledge School District got a 6 day weekend due to freezing temperatures, the amount of snow, and black ice on the roads.
GLPS had its first snow day of the year on Friday, January 12, 2024. This gave students an extra day to relax into the weekend. Students received 2 more snow days following Martin Luther King Day. The decision made by school administrators was in response to the severe winter storm taking place in the Midwest. The safety of staff and students has been and remains a top priority at Grand Ledge.
Staff and students expressed their reactions to this break from the academic routine. Senior, Bryce Whitmoyer, gave her views on the events. “I was very happy about hearing the news, the snow days gave me extra time to catch up on my baking skills and read many chapters of ‘The Fourth Wing’ by Rebecca Yarros.”
Civics teacher, Justin Heany, also expressed his opinion. “Not only was it a snow day for the students, but it was a snow day for me as well. I spent the time with my kids because it is important to me and we aren’t guaranteed snow days forever.” Heany then expressed his opinion of homework on days off. “I’m not the biggest fan of homework. I’m not one to give assignments on snow days as I believe it is a cultural celebration that we should all be able to enjoy.”
Teachers and students faced the challenges of adjusting their academic plans. Lessons were adapted, and some teachers used alternative methods to ensure that the learning process continued despite interruptions.
Remote learning helped play a crucial role for students to stay on schedule with their current classwork. Teachers utilized online platforms like Google Classroom to continue lessons, assignments, and communication with students, ensuring that education was maintained outside of the traditional classroom setting.
