Super Bowl 58 will be kicking off on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024 at 6:30 p.m.The matchup is between the sixth time returning team the Kansas City Chiefs and fifth time returning San Francisco 49ers. The Chiefs will enter the game with an 11-6 record and the 49ers with 12-5. Even with very close records, the 49ers are the betting favorites to win. The 49ers and their season compared to the Chiefs are seen to have more of a successful season.
Despite the excitement for both teams and their fans there is one person who has created even more attention and overview into this game, Taylor Swift.
Swift has reportedly brought up the value of the Chiefs as much as $331.5 million. The rise in price relates to her relationship with two time Super Bowl champion and NFL record holder with 8,000 career yards, Travis Kelce.
Some football fans are here for Swift, and others strongly disagree with her newfound attention within the NFL. It has left a lot of watchers angered towards her new found spotlight in the stands. Within the new relationship she was reportedly given up to a minute and 16 seconds during the Chiefs and Dolphins game on Jan. 13, but then noted as only receiving 44 seconds in the matchup between the Chiefs and Ravens AFC championship game. During this game as well she was reportedly booed at and told she is “ruining the NFL”
Some Grand Ledge High School students share the sentiments echoed above, “the NFL gives her much airtime and a lot of attention for no reason,” said Freshman Kingston Nixon.
On the other hand many people are glad to see that girls can watch and enjoy football and see Swift as a symbol for girl power and a new wave of fans have followed with her even showing up to games in Chiefs jerseys with the last names or other quotes such as “Chiefs (Taylors Version)” and in my “Chiefs Era.”
“Honestly I don’t see a problem with it, Travis goes to her concerts and supports her like she is doing for him, it’s a people problem, Taylor is just being a supportive girlfriend,” said Sophomore, Mayson Morgan
Although some still would disagree, “they make it all about her and not about football and after every good play they show Taylor Swift,” said senior, Brandon Freeman
Although she has brought in money and brought up viewers some could see it as an issue or threat.
