Many students are getting back into the repetition of another school year, but one student has already come to stand out.
Varsha Sudhakar is a freshman at Grand Ledge High School. Sudhakar, with a 4.2 GPA-4.0 unweighted halfway through the first trimester, balances academics with the demands of being on the varsity volleyball team. Varsha has been playing volleyball for three, going on four years now, and competes outside the school season for Ballistic Volleyball Club on the 15-1 national team. Despite her experience, her spot on varsity still came as a surprise,
“Being moved up on the third day of tryouts was such a shock for me,” Sudhakar said.
She attended a JV summer camp at Ferris State University, but she was moved up on the last day of tryouts or varsity. “I have a very rigorous course load and I’m playing at a very high level of volleyball,” Sudhakar said. Between late-night practices, weekend tournaments, and a demanding academic schedule filled with honors and Advanced Placement classes, maintaining balance proves to be a challengingtask. Her motivation stems from the goals she’s set for herself-both on and off the court; “I’m shooting for an Ivy, but I’ll probably end up at the University of Michigan…I really want to go into computer science, but I’m still undecided,” Sudhakar said.
While many freshmen are just beginning to explore high school life, Varsha is already mapping out her future.
Still, she faces challenges,
“I think just finding time for myself,” said Sudhakar. “I’m consumed with everything that’s going on, and I don’t really have time to like, relax and do my own thing.”
As Varsha continues to navigate her first year of high school, she’s proving that age doesn’t define determination. Balancing varsity volleyball and a demanding course load isn’t easy, but she’s already showing the kind of commitment and focus that will take her far-both in sports and in life.
