The 2025-2026 Detroit Lions Football season has once again left fans hoping for improvement. The team showed most of their strength in offense rather than defense, scoring 3rd in passing yards, 14th in rushing, and tied 4th in points, averaging 28.3 points per game. “I thought they were a little better than average, defense is still not where it needs to be, ” Steve Delaney, a teacher at Grand Ledge High School, said.
Though the players on the team themselves seemed to get high achievements as well, Jared Goff had one of the strongest seasons in the entirety of his career, throwing for 4,564 yards and having 34 touchdowns. While their quarterback had an impressive year, so did their wide receiver, Amon-Ra St Brown, finishing with 11 touchdowns and 1,401 receiving yards, possibly the most successful. “Amon Ron St Brown, he had over 100 catches and was a unanimous Pro Bowl selection,” Delaney said.
St Brown was reliable, becoming the main target for Goff, as well as Jahmyr Gibbs, playing a role as well. Rushing 1, 223 yards and scoring 13 touchdowns, Gibbs’ speed and ability to make big plays helped the offense stay strong.
The Detroit Lions finished 22nd in points, keeping about 24.3 points per game, having 346 first downs, 6344 total offensive lines, 2041 total rushing yards, and 4567 total passing yards. They had 39 sacks and 57 touchdowns at the end of the season. When asked about the Lions’ best year, Delaney said, “statistically last year and 1992.”
Through it all, the offensive line could still use improvement, ranking 12th by PFF. The new interior starters seemed to struggle to keep up with the success from past years. Penei Sewell played better than most as well, helping protect Goff throughout the season.
The Lions ended with a 9-8 this past season, finishing fourth in the NFC North. When entering the new year, the early 2026 offseason, the team signed players like Devin Conchran, Malik Cunningham, and Chris Smith to future contracts, hoping for improvement next season. Overall, the 2025-2026 Lions left with fans hoping for more, continuing to support them no matter what, “I am true to my teams, I am not a fair weather fan, someday we will win it!” Delaney stated.
