Braden James, a senior and an athlete at Grand Ledge High School (GLHS), is not losing his hard work he put in at GLHS over the past 4 years. James has planned to bring that same dedication and energy to Wayne State University (WSU). Wayne State is a Division 2 public university located in Detroit, Michigan. What about WSU did the senior feel obligated to call them his home court for the next 4 years?
“The coaches were very nice (on his first visit). They care a lot about the connection with their players and the school. The school also has a very good health program for what I want to go into, which is exercise science.” James said.
The forward/center announced his commitment on signing day, which took place on Nov. 13, 2025.
“My grandpa definitely got me into basketball as a kid,” Braden shares. Not only did his grandfather feed into his passion, but John Horford, a former UMich basketball player, has guided James through the years.
“I work out with him all the time. He always gives me great words of advice and helps me out.” James said.
James not only limits his skills to GLHS and WSU, but he also plays on the Grand Rapids Storm club basketball team during the off-season. Although for the athlete, there is no off-season for him. Over the years and several different teams, teammates have left their mark on the athlete,
“I’ve definitely learned, you know, a lot of good life lessons, but I also learned that basketball can help you find who your best friends are,” Braden admitted.
Every athlete has their own goals for the upcoming season. James has a few for himself and his freshman year at WSU.
“For basketball I want to put on weight and muscle. But I want to make some new friends in general.” James said.
But alongside goals, athletes often have superstitions that may lead them to achieve these milestones.
“I always eat a baked potato with salt and pre-workout before a game. The reason for the potato is for the carbs, and the salt helps with hydration and electrolytes.”
Many seniors prepare themselves for their final season, but for James, it is just now beginning.
