As of January 20, 2025, Donald Trump took office as the 47th president of the United States of America. Since then, Trump has done what he said he was going to do. Raise deportation rates. Cut costs. Close the Department of Education. Many have felt the nation stopped rising together and instead began tearing one another down. Students at Grand Ledge High School (GLHS) have had their fair share of opinions about President Trump.
Olivia Dean, a senior at Grand Ledge, admits how she reacted to Trump’s election back in 2024. “I cried and I felt a level of disappointment, but there was also a level of acceptance. I had realized a few days before election day that there would be no way for Kamala Harris to win, because most people don’t want to see a woman in power, or a person of color in power, and therefore, they vote for the safer option in their opinion.”
As the nation reaches the presidential midterm elections, held in November of ‘26, supporters of President Trump are beginning to reconsider their party decision based on his current presidential decisions. People, locally and nationally, have thousands of words to use to describe Trump’s presidency so far. A few students here at GLHS, left and right leaning, have offered to share their word with The Comets’ Tale.
Stephanie Kohn, a sophomore at GLHS, described Trump’s current term as “unprepared”, “I feel like he’s been doing a lot of things off of instinct, and in hope that people might like him, but it’s kind of backfired a lot. He just hasn’t really been prepared for the outcome of a lot of the things that he’s done.” Kohn isn’t the only one who feels this way as Dean shares a mutual feeling. “Hell. That’s how I would describe it so far. I am an AP Government student. I have taken an international relations class. I love political science, and when you learn about the inner workings of government, you find out that everything Trump is doing is truthfully unconstitutional and unlawful.”
Not only do the students have just a word to share, but thoughts on how his actions will impact the citizens of the United States in the foreseeable future. According to ‘The White House’ and the Trump Administration, “We will make America safe again.” Aubree Hultburg, a sophomore at GLHS, can agree with this proclaimed statement.
“He exposed the countries that are bringing drugs into the United States that are killing millions of Americans every year.”
President Trump has expressed his concern for the upcoming elections; he predicts impeachment if Republicans lose. “You got to win the midterms, because if we don’t win the midterms, it’s just going to be … I mean, they’ll find a reason to impeach me … I’ll get impeached,” the president shares at a policy retreat.
The people of America can only state their opinions until the election polls open up nationwide. Michigan’s election day will take place on August 4th. A majority of the Grand Ledge senior class of 2026 will be eligible in this upcoming election, as a good amount of students are of the legal age, 18.
“I am so excited to be able to vote in this upcoming midterm election because I can use it to express my beliefs and vote for someone who will speak for my beliefs against this current administration,” Olivia shared.
