Football Comes to a Close
December 11, 2020
To finish off the 2020 season the Grand Ledge Comets faced the Holt Rams for the second time this year. The Comets offense got off to a fast start with a 70 yard touchdown pass from Senior quarterback, Noah Warren, to Sophomore wide receiver, Andrew Konieczney, followed up with a Warren two point conversion run making the score 8-0. The Comet defense continued the strong start with a quick defensive stop, but a big punt from the Rams punter pinned the offense deep in their own territory. After a poor Grand Ledge offensive drive, the Rams capitalized on great field position with a quick scoring drive and a two point conversion of their own making the score 8-8. The Comet defense continued to look dominant, forcing another punt out of the Rams offense. Big plays by Noah Warren and Finn Buckland to start off the next Comet drive led to a big score to give them a 15-8 lead. A heart crushing 85 yard kickoff return for touchdown by the Rams left the Comets in shock. Another two point conversion for the Holt Rams put them up 16-15. After a poor kick by the Rams the Comets capitalized with a quick 7 play scoring drive putting them up 22-16 to end the high scoring first quarter.
A strong 7 minute, 15 play drive from the Rams offense was a blueprint of what was yet to come for the Grand Ledge defense and gave the Rams a 26-22 lead halfway through the second quarter. The special teams woes continued for the Comets after a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, giving the ball back to the Rams in excellent scoring position. A deep 40 yard touchdown pass put the Rams up 33-26. Another costly mistake by the Comets put the Rams in prime scoring position just before half. To finish off the 1st half the Rams kicked a 15 yard field goal to go up 36-22.
Holt came out of the half strong with a lengthy 7 minute drive to put them up 43-22. A last chance effort by the Comets quarterback led to an interception which seemingly put the game away. Although the Comets were down 21 points entering the fourth quarter they didn’t give up. A quick turnover on downs set the comets up at the 50 yard line. Noah Warren finally sparked the offense in the second half with a nice 35 yard pass and 15 yard touchdown run to bring the score to 43-29. Another fourth down stop allowed the Comets to score again and bring the score to 43-36. The Comet effort proved to be too little too late and the Rams just ran the clock out on the game and the Comet season.
The Comets finished the season 6-3 with losses to Dewitt, East Lansing, and Holt. Although it was a tough finish to the season, the 6-3 record for Grand Ledge came as a shock to many after a 2-7 finish last season. When asked why the team did so much better this year, Senior quarterback Noah Warren said, “We bought into the program and trusted each other”. To many, the team looked much better than last year. The 6-3 record looks promising for the Grand Ledge football program and Comet fans should be excited to see what the future holds for coach Brya and his team.
